God's Expectation of Man
The Parable of the Fig Tree
Matthew
21:18-20Matthew
21:18-20
18. Early in the morning, as he was on his way
back to the city, he was hungry. 19. Seeing a fig tree by the
road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. The he
said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree
withered. 20. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How
did the fig tree wither so quickly?" they asked.;
Luke 13:6-9Luke
13:6-9
6. The he told this parable: "A man had a fig
tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it,
but did not find any. 7. So he said to the man who took care of
the vineyar, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit
on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it
use up the soil?' 8. "Sir, the man replied, "leave it alone for
one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it. 9. If it
bears fruit next year, fine! If not then cut it down.";
Isaiah 5:1-6Isaiah
5:1-6
1. I will sing for the one I love a song about his
vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. 2.
He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the
choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress
as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded
only bad fruit. 3. Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and men of
Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4. What more could have
been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for
good grapes, why did it yield only bad? 5. Now I will tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge,
and it will be destroyed: I will break down its wall, and it will be
trampled. 6. I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor
cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command
the clouds not to rain on it."
There are two passages in the Bible that talk about the fig tree.
The first was the true experience of Jesus Christ and the second was
a parable. In Matthew 21:18-20, Jesus Christ sought fruit on the fig
tree in the summer when the plant was blossom with leaves not in
winter when plant is not expected to have fruit. Jesus Christ sought
fruit on this plant when under normal circumstances the tree should
have produced fruit. Jesus Christ sought fruit on the plant having
in mind that others might have visited the fig tree and perhaps
harvested it, but he hoped that some of its fruit could be hidden
within the leaves. The Creator sought fruit from the tree when He
was in need of fruit but he could not find any on the tree that was
supposed to bear fruit. The unfruitfulness of this tree resulted in
the Masters disappointment. (Luke 3:6-7) Some were of the opinion
that Jesus Christ should not have cursed the fig tree. To these
people, I ask. What do you expect a shepherd to do with barren
cattle? Hebrew 6:8Hebrew
6:8
8. But land that produces thorns and thistles is
worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be
burned. Matthew 3:7-10 The second passage in Luke
13:6-9 is like the first passage with exception of the
long-suffering of God waiting for positive changes to take place in
the life of the fig tree, but the consequence of not bearing fruit
is the same.
Let
us relate the experience of Jesus Christ with the fig tree in this
study and also His parable of the tree with God's expectation of
fruitfulness in the life of man. God's expectation of fruitfulness
in the life of man is not in terms of biological offspring or
material wealth. God's expectation is in terms of spiritual
fruitfulness. God will not like to reap where He did not sow. He
created man in His own image and gave us a breath of life. He is the
sustainer of the whole universe and we are living through each day
of lives at His instances. He is daily manifest His mightiness in
our lives because of the great work of dominionship He gave man.
When we are yet a sinner, He made provision of our reconciliation
with Him in the person of His only begotten Son. God need men that
are equipped in righteousness and abound in the fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23Galatians
5:22-23
22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfullness, 23.
gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
because God want godly men that will begat godly fruit that will
continue to tend the vineyard of God.
The
servants of God did not keep quiet over this, they are daily
revealing the mind of God concerning your lives. You are hearing
their message on the radio, television and in the crusade ground.
You are also reading it on this web page even His rainbow, that is,
signs and wonders of nature that we are seeing everyday are all
pointing to the same thing - reminding us of the expectation of God
concerning our lives.
Matthew 13:22-23Matthew
13:22-23
22. The one who received the seed that fell among
the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this
life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.
23. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the
man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a
crop, yeilding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
The holy Spirit is bearing witness of the truth concerning the word
of God in our mind.
To
whom much is given much is expected
Luke 12:48Luke
12:48
48. But the one who does not know and does things
deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone
who has been given much, much will be demanded: and from the one who
has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Your knowledge, understanding and wisdom - these are powerful
attributes that differentiate us from animals. How are you applying
these rare capabilities? Are you applying them to bear the desired
fruit in your life? Are they bearing the expected fruit in your life
in its due season? Have you ever asked yourself, "What is the
purpose why God created you? Why is God daily nurturing you and
caring for you? Why is He preserving you and protecting you amidst
the danger and perils out there? Why was the grace made available
for you at Calvary that you may have second lease of life while
younger and older people around you are passing away?
Jesus Christ is the dresser of the vineyard and you are the fig
tree. He left His glory in Heaven in order to dig round you - the
beloved fig tree of God - in terms of His teaching and examples, and
fertilized you with His abundant and amazing grace, with a high
expectation that you will bear fruit for His glory. There is still
an opportunity for you to focus on the purpose of God in your life.
The right step towards this is to abide in Him, because He is the
true Vine and we are the branches.
John 15:4-7John
15:4-7
4. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No
branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither
can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5. "I am the vine;
you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will
bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6. If anyone
does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and
withers: such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and
burned 7. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask
whatever you wish, and it will be given to you.
Reflect on this:
How
does this study apply to you? What do you think is the expectation
of God in your life? What must you do to bear fruit in your
Christian life journey on earth? I pray that you will be able to
approach this courageously and wholeheartedly!
