Balanced Diet
Nutritionists defined a "balanced diet" as food that is rich in the
right amount of nutrients/vitamins in the right quantity and quality
that nourishes the body: right caloric value, not in excess of
essential vitamins ABC...Z, at the same time, not deficient of
essential vitamins. The balanced diet may include grains, legumes,
vegetables, fruits and reasonable choice of desserts.
No matter how
right the nutritionists' definition of balanced diet may seem to be, they
are still far from being right because the human being comprises of the
"body", "spirit" and "soul". (Some people use spirit and soul
inter-changeably, however, this is not the object of this tract). The body
may be felt, seen and touched but the Spirit is the invisible and dynamic
man living in your body, the temple of the Most High. The body of a human
being is the house of the Spirit of God that dwells in us. Without this
important occupant, the body will become lifeless. When we consume the
so-called balanced diet, according to the nutritionist, it nourishes the
body only when it digests in our alimentary canals. How then can a human
being's diet be balanced when the occupant of the body, the Spirit of the
Living God in us is starving?
Therefore, the
question is how do we feed the Spirit? The Spirit is fed with spiritual
things. This comprises of a sweet fellowship in the presence of the Lord, a
praise worship in our hearts in form of song or hymn and of course - the
sword of the spirit which is the word of God; reading the word constantly
and seeking the divine understanding of it through meditation, because the
Bible says "God is Spirit . . . must be worshipped in Spirit and in truth".
The combination of nourishing food in the stomach and spiritual food in our
hearts makes a balanced diet. This is the concept of a balanced diet
explained from spiritual point of view.
Paul was aware
of the importance of food in the body and yet he admonished, "let the word
(the spiritual food) dwell in you richly." (Colossians 3:16) God
specifically told Joshua that the book of law should not depart from his
hand. He commanded him to meditate on it day and night, and in it, he will
prosper. (Joshua 1:8). The Psalmist revealed the wonderful effect of this
spiritual food when he said, in the Book of Psalm, the person will be like a
tree planted by the river side that bring forth its fruits in its due
season. (Psalm 1:2-3) Jesus Christ said, "Man shall not live by the bread
alone, but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God. (Matthew
4:4)
The good news
about this spiritual food is that there is no excess in-take. It is fat
free. It does not cause obesity nor does it injure the consumer. In fact,
the more you take out of this food of the Spirit the higher the spiritual
height you attain towards heavenly perfect shape.
Have I whetted
your appetite? Do you desire this special spiritual food which is only in
Christ Jesus? Please give it a try. May God bless you richly in the love of
His Son, our Blessed Savior, and the Word - the Spiritual food that became
flesh for you and for me.
